Like The Ceiling Can’t Hold Us

The big day was finally here. The contractors were putting the finishing touches on the shiny new office space. A little touch up here, a little trim work there, the newly designed space was everything that business owner Joey had envisioned. The custom furniture, designed to be practical, modern, comfortable, and on brand was assembled. The custom fabric had that new furniture smell that Joey had loved so much. Things were arranged, knick knacks placed on bookshelves, TV’s were mounted, and it was finally ready for occupancy. This had been a long time coming, Joey had been working on crafting this new assembly space for about a year. Working with contractors, painters, and the furniture company, it was going to be an amazing space for community events and should help to grow his business.

Joey locked the door with a huge sense of pride and accomplishment on that Friday evening and couldn’t wait to share the space with his employees and guests for a grand opening happening early next week. During the weekend, Joey, out of tons of excitement, decided to go back to the office and make sure that things were just perfect for the ribbon cutting. As he turned the key, he beamed from ear to ear, beyond excited to just take in the space one more time. He closed the door and took it all in. Turning the corner to the main assembly room something got the attention of his nose. Something foul. Something sinister. As he walked slowly into the room, the intensity of the smell grew even more unbearable. Trying to figure out what was happening, Joey noticed that the ceiling was completely caved in and that the furniture, flooring, bookshelves, AND IT closet was covered with “stuff.” Stuff that had fallen in from the ceiling. Wet stuff. SMELLY stuff. It was sewage. A pipe had broken due to some construction on the floor above and had penetrated the ceiling in his brand new suite. That smell was NOT coming out.

Joey was beside himself. And then he got to thinking. What about the IT equipment and the server? He quickly tried to access his files from his phone. They popped up in seconds. Relieved, he started to examine the server room a bit more, the server was toast and sitting in sewage water from the ceiling. Well, S@#* Joey thought, thank God I just moved to the cloud. His internal infrastructure smelled like a zoo, his $25,000 of new custom furniture was stained from sewage, the brand new laminate flooring absorbed all of the soupy liquid, BUT, his business data was untouched. He could recover from this and his business will live on another day.
